Like many things in life it is important to find a balance.
Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest all offer fun ways to engage with other people.
We receive instant messages, likes and shares. These are all important functions which validate who we are.
They are also highly addictive.
In this post, I wanted to look at what is the best time for our grandchildren to use social media.
Managing Social Media Use
So, when is it a good time to discuss your grandchild’s participation in social media platforms?
If you are concerned, and your grandchild has a smartphone then the answer to that question is now.
Setting up a timetable with boundaries
Draw up a timetable for your grandchildren to follow when they are at your house.
Using an excel spreadsheet will give you a lot of advantages.
You can download a template here- SOCIAL MEDIA TIMETABLE.
You’ll see from the template that there are not many times allotted to use social media. Of course, these can be negotiated, and may change during holidays. Your grandchild will need to agree to the timetable, and show you how responsible he or she can be.
It’s important to remember that once you have boundaries and a timetable in place, you have something to fall back on.
We need to help our grandchildren prepare for their future, and teaching them to manage the amount of time they spend on social media is an important step.
