Getting together in the kitchen is a fun way to spend time with your grandchildren.
If you are a busy grandparent you’ll appreciate our quick and simple recipes created to be fun and nutritious.
Best of all they are easy to make, and you and your grandchildren will benefit from adding nutrients into your diet.
The Kids’ Smoothie Challenge is a fun competition where the winner creates the most nutritious, and perhaps quirky, smoothie.
You and your grandchildren will be the judges.
We have supplied a recipe below, but the ingredients are only limited by your resources, and your imagination.
The Kids’ Smoothie Challenge
In this challenge each person creates a smoothie of their own concoction.
The one who can prove their creation is the most nutritious wins. This may mean researching the vitamins and mineral content of each ingredient.
Scoring should be based on taste, smoothness, nutritional value. Score each smoothie out of 10 and add up the score.
The winner will be the one with the highest score, and the most nutritious smoothie.
Before your grandkids get into the kitchen
How much freedom you give your grandchildren in the kitchen will, of course, depend on their age and experience.
Don’t be over cautious. A child who can use a knife responsibly and safely will have a lot more confidence than one who can’t.
You will need to be prepared for more mess, and some food wastage.
We always compost our vegetable and fruit scraps or they are fed to the guinea pigs.
Banana Fruit Smoothie
You will need:
- A banana
- Other fruit and veggies
- Water or milk
- Natural Greek-style yoghurt
Here’s what to do:
- Chuck everything in your blender and mix!
- Serve with ice if the weather is warm
- If your grandchild loves bananas and not much else, add banana to every smoothie. The taste will over power everything else including spinach leaves! Which, by the way, make a fun, bright green smoothie!
- Garnish with mint or strawberries!
