Today we are have Ellie Royce and her fabulous book, Lucas and Jack, in the Children’s Author Spotlight.
Ellie, along with illustrator Andrew Mc Lean, has created a touching book about a young boy who gets a valuable lesson waiting outside a nursing home. Bored, as many kids are, Lucas meets an older gentleman who tells him tales about what life was like for him so many years before.
Lucas and Jack is a touching story that opens many questions for grandparents and their grandchildren.
Waiting and bored!
Every week Lucas’ mum visits Great Grandpop at the nursing home. And every week Lucas waits for her outside. Waiting is boring! Until Lucas meets Jack.
This book, inspired by real residents in an aged care facility, was written in response to all the stories that were going unheard, stories that have since kept younger relatives of these same residents coming back for more. Can you imagine an 8 year old driving a horse and cart and delivering ice for pocket money in today’s world?
Lucas and Jack is a great book for introducing young children to the idea that older people can be fun and that deep down we have more in common than we think.
More importantly Lucas & Jack encourages children to ask questions, be curious, imaginative and empathetic. An ideal book to read with grandparents, opening the door to more stories and sharing of family history.
