Encouraging your grandchild to read for pleasure may be more difficult than you realize.
While we all know how important reading is we have to show them that reading is pleasurable and fun.
But how do we do this in the digital world we live in?
In the next few posts we are going to look at guaranteed ways you can use to encourage your grandchild to read books and develop a reading habit that will stay with them for life.
Choosing the right book
The first thing you are going to do is choose a book that suits your grandchild’s literacy level.
Obviously, you are going to pick picture books for toddlers or early readers.
As the child grows, you’ll need to look at books that contain more complex sentence structures and themes.
Ask mom and dad what books the children are reading at school. Each year level will have a prescribed reading list which will give you an indication of what books your grandchild can read.
Choose books from a wide range of subject matters to open up your grandchild’s mind to new and interesting ideas.
If they are reluctant, why not take choosing the book in turns. They can pick a book one day; and you get to choose one the next.
What types of books should you choose?
Always try to choose a wide variety of books. This includes paperbacks, hardbacks and even soft, vinyl books.
Take into consideration that small hands may find it difficult to hold a large, heavy book.
When choosing books try to think outside the box and be courageous!
