There are seven broad roles many grandparents play. The purpose of defining different roles is to allow you to explore each one, and decide which one best pertains to you right now. As well, you may find that like me, you have moved from one to the other.
Are the roles of grandfathers and grandmothers different?
As well, there is a difference between the role men and the role women imagine they must play. Men instinctively want to protect and guide their families. Women fill the nurturing role, more passive role.
Neither of these broad statements are exactly true for reach one of us. Men and women are encouraged to explore the many and various aspects of their personalities. As life changes so do their roles, and how they perceive their usefulness in the world.
Developing a win / win relationship with your grandchildren
My goal is to work with you to be the best grandparent you can be for you and your grandchildren. I want you to set up a WIN / WIN relationship where both of you benefit, and come out winners. But, this is not going to come about from luck or chance. You are going to have to plan your approach based on what you see as your role; how that ties in with your philosophy of grandparenting, and what you want to achieve.
