Astro’s Adventures: The Great Escape – They Are All in the Checkout

Rocky grabbed Astro by the scruff of the neck and forced him into the tunnel. Astro wriggled and squirmed, but couldn’t get free from Commander Rocky’s firm grasp. “Get in,” Commander Rocky mumbled angrily, “I’ll show you how lucky you are!”

But Astro didn’t hear him; he was too busy scrambling through the dark tunnel with his tail between his legs. If he hesitated for just one second, Commander Rocky put his large black paw on his shoulder and pushed him forward.

Speed Bump Charlie soon Arrives

Speed Bump Charlie and his team were on the trail. They had seen Commander Rocky free Astro and leave the café and managed to follow them without detection. They had only lost them once when trying to cross the freeway, but they had picked up the trail easily enough because Astro had insisted on stopping three times to find discarded food on the ground and sixty times to wee.

They gathered in the bushes just in time to see Commander Rocky and Astro disappear down a hole. They could hear Astro whimpering for a short time, but then the sound stopped.

“Is he dead?” remarked Nigel coolly.

“’Course not,” snapped Charlie, “the tunnel must be deep.”

He stroked his chin with his paw and limped over to the hole. He peered down it and began to form a devious plan in his head.

“We need to follow them and find out what they’re up to,” he said. “It won’t be easy team, but with our brilliant minds and magnificent physical condition, we will have no trouble.”

Nigel and the other cats looked at Speed Bump’s crippled body and were puzzled.

“What exactly are we going to do?” sighed Nigel. He was tired after the long trip and frankly feeling a little grubby. He began to preen himself when he noticed the twins smiling at him. He straightened himself up and puffed out his chest.

“Of course, I am ready for anything, leader,” he addressed Speed Bump Charlie loudly. Nigel continued to brag, “What is it that you want me to do? Just ask and I will do it. I am brave and very very strong.” He winked at the twins. They giggled in unison.

“Get down the hole!” ordered Speed Bump Charlie.

Nigel looked at all the dirt… the brown, sticky dirt… and thought about his brilliant white fur. He turned slowly to Speed Bump and whispered, “Look, I don’t do dirt. Couldn’t you send one of the others in?”

Speed Bump Charlie rolled his eyes and then ordered the Siamese. “Lily, enter the hole and find out what they are doing.”

“Ah, I dunno boss,” meowed Lily, “It looks very deep to me and there’s an awful smell.” She held her nose and said, “Phewwweee!”

Once they got a whiff, the twins moved backwards away from the hole to get away from the terrible smell. Nigel moved away and sat on a nearby log and shook his head.

Speed Bump Charlie inched his way closer to the hole, but the smell was overpowering even for him. “It’s no good,” he said. “We’ll have to find another way in.”

He looked around at the high fences. “Let’s squeeze under the fence.”

They all marched towards the back fence and Nigel shook his head because he had allowed himself to get involved with this silly plan in the first place.

The only thing that kept him going was the sheer joy he would experience seeing stupid Astro locked in a cage forever!
