Astro’s Adventures: The Great Escape – Astro Goes into the Checkout

By the time Commander Rocky and Astro had reached several mountains of dirt just outside the Check Out, the message had been transmitted.

“What are we doing here?” Astro whispered looking curiously at the front gates. He had heard of this place when he had tried to curl up in front of the fire on cold nights next to Nigel. The cat had told him about it when their owner wasn’t home. Nigel said that it was a dark, smelly place where humans sent their dogs to be tortured and that once inside no dog ever got out again! He said there were monsters inside that ripped dogs into pieces and ate them.

Astro Remembers the Story

Astro had been scared out of his wits by these stories. He knew it was Nigel’s wicked way of frightening him; and of course it worked so well. Astro kept away from the fire which meant the cat had it to himself for many evenings afterwards.

Astro turned quickly to Commander Rocky, “Why have you brought me here?”

Commander Rocky looked at the large steel front gates. He didn’t turn to Astro, but he did answer him. “I want to show you something.”

Although he was the most experienced of all the operatives and was the Commander, this terrible place sent shudders down his spine. It was the one place that all dogs feared regardless of how important they were.

“Look for a hole,” he commanded Astro.

They sniffed at the ground.

What’s That Smell?

“What’s this?” exclaimed Astro, “It stinks!” Astro stumbled back covering his nose with his paw.

Commander Rocky came over to investigate. “It’s Alfie,” he answered, “He always smells like that. Don’t worry about it. At least you’ve found the entrance to the tunnel.”

“A tunnel? Oh, how exciting,” Astro jumped up and down, “Where does it go?”

Commander Rocky turned and looked at him. “In there,” he pointed to the Check Out.

Astro gulped and stopped jumping up and down.

“We’re actually going to break in? Are you mad? We’ll be caught and put in prison!” he backed away, his eyes wide and staring in disbelief, his paws held out in front of him.

“You’ve been given an order,” Commander Rocky growled, “And I’m going to make sure that you obey it!”
