Astro’s Adventures: The Great Escape –Speed Bump Charlie

Nigel usually ignored the antics of dogs as nothing more than the foolish actions of the largest group of sycophants in the world.

Cats were far more superior. While they tolerated humans and let them provide food and shelter, it was only by the cat’s choice. Many cats lived happily catching their own food and surviving in the wild and have no use for human beings. While other cats see no need for such strenuous exertions and are happy to allow humans to provide for their every whim. Nigel was one of these cats.

Nigel is Joined by Speed Bump Charlie

Nigel hovered over the neighbor’s fish pond deciding which goldfish to eat when he heard a low rustle in the ferns behind him. Before he could turn around he heard a harsh voice.

“Nigel the Cat, it is time we did something about those dogs, don’t you think?”

Nigel spun around to see an old tabby cat standing amongst the shrubbery. His top teeth were missing and he had a crooked back leg. He had heard many scary tales about this wild cat who didn’t belong to any human and yet lived like a king. He was owned by no one, but loved by many who left food out and provided him with a warm bed. He chose to visit whichever home he wanted and was completely free. He had been hit by many cars, but wrote off his injuries as the price he had to pay for his freedom.

Speed Bump Charlie grinned at him and licked his lips.

Speed Bump Charlie wants to Ruin the Plans of the Dogs

“Why?” shrugged Nigel. “They are only silly dogs playing some silly dog game.”

“The Organization is planning to release Astro,” hissed Speed Bump Charlie. “They think he’s being mistreated. They are getting very powerful. It is time we did something about it. We are the supreme pets of human kind, not dogs. It is our responsibility to make sure dogs are kept on a leash at all times leaving us cats to prowl about as we please without being chased.”

Nigel was certainly interested in bringing down all dogs and keeping them imprisoned. He was even willing to help this noble cause on two conditions. One, he didn’t have to get dirty and two, he wouldn’t be late for dinner.

“What did you have in mind?” Nigel asked casually.

“Follow me. There are other felines who feel as we do and are prepared to bring down The Organization and keep dogs in their place.”

With that Speed Bump Charlie limped through the bushes and hurled himself over the fence. Nigel followed with much more grace and poise, and half a goldfish hanging out of his mouth.
